By design the tough ABS polymer container is both smooth and rounded (so there is nothing for a bear to grip) and is sized to be too big to fit in the jaws of the average bear. It is also highly effective and keeping gnawing rodents and other wildlife out.

The lid fastens closed with strong stainless-steel locks that are easy for a human being to open with a coin, key, or screwdriver, but but impossible for a bear.

In addition to keeping hungry bears out, the Backpackers Cache Bear Proof Container also helps reduce the transmission of odors from items stored inside that attract bears. Nonetheless, for maximum safety always put your odorous items inside odor proof storage bags before locking them in the canister.
